The training consists of a series of intense, hands-on, essential training scenarios designed to challenge the cadets to develop new skills and prepare them for real-life emergency fire and hazardous situations.
It is aimed at developing both individual skills and team coordination of the cadets, who could be the future of the UK Fire Emergency contingency crew. The programme allows for the cadets to take a significant step forward in their training, starting with some fire behaviour demonstrations and hose drills to help build their understanding of fire dynamics, response tactics and teamwork under pressure.
The cadets learn techniques to remain safe in critical high-pressure simulations as well as how to manage road traffic collisions. Developing these skills vital is for emergency and accident response. A house fire exercise allows them to showcase their courage and problem-solving abilities. They experience what it is like to use breathing apparatus in low-visibility conditions, as well as actively navigate through cosmetic smoke to experience adapting to challenging environments.
On the final day of training, the cadets face a simulated challenge which builds upon all they have learned over the past few days. A commercial setting is set up as a location for a fire, complete with intense conditions, casualty rescues, and firefighting duties. Equipped with their breathing apparatus, the cadets work together to safely to evacuate casualties and extinguish the fire.
The training culminates in an Awards Ceremony where each cadet receives a trophy in recognition of their hard work. In addition, further awards are given for exceptional performance across the weekend.
Paul Rankin, Director of Fire & Aviation commented: “I am thrilled to have welcomed another group of 16 young individuals to the Fire College for our annual Fire Cadets weekend.”
“We are always impressed by the level of commitment and dedication the cadets give over the course of the training. We hope to continue to strengthen our partnership with the London Fire Brigade cadets and are proud to have provided another unforgettable experience."
