The Skill, Resilience and Judgment Behind Mobile Security

In this blog, hear from Peter Savva, Head of Mobile Services at Securitas UK, who explains the skills behind one of the most mentally challenging and operationally critical functions in physical security.

    More Than a Routine Shift

Mobile officers often cover 250+ miles in a single shift across multiple sites, balancing a wide range of responsibilities From alarm activations and access breaches to vacant property checks. Every shift requires careful planning, coordination and real-time decision-making. Routes are scheduled to the minute and incidents must be triaged in real time.

Each site has its own protocols, vulnerabilities and escalation contacts, which officers must navigate often alone, at night and under pressure.

    Prepared for the Unexpected

Mobile officers operate in unpredictable environments. False alarms account for around 80% of callouts, but officers also respond to serious situations, including break-ins, accidents nearby, or discovering someone in medical distress.

Handling this unpredictability demands more than basic training. Emotional resilience, trauma-informed response, incident management, and professional conduct under pressure are essential. When businesses are under threat, officers make critical, on-the-spot decisions. Mobile patrols are specialised frontline roles that require skill, precision, and constant situational awareness.

Technology as a Support, Not a Replacement

Digital tools – CCTV, alarms and sensors are vital for monitoring. However, they cannot interpret context, read intent or de-escalate tense situations. Officers remain the essential link, detecting subtle issues, interpreting risks in real time, and responding professionally. Technology enhances their work, but it cannot replace the judgment and adaptability of trained personnel.

    Managing Lone Working Risks

Lone working is both a defining feature of mobile security and one of its greatest risks. Devices, monitoring and escalation protocols are essential, yet so is culture: Officers must never feel isolated operationally or emotionally.

A forward-thinking approach ensures real-time monitoring, welfare check-ins and clear escalation pathways, giving officers confidence that support is available whenever needed.

Burnout, turnover and why it matters?

Night hours, long shifts and solitary work. It’s not for everyone and these aspects of the role, as any mobile security services provider will know can contribute to high staff churn. High turnover can undermine site familiarity, reduces response quality and damage client trust.

To retain experienced officers, providers must invest in smarter rostering, mental health support, career development and thorough training to boost confidence and recognition. Experienced, consistent personnel are a risk mitigator and the backbone of effective security.

The Strategic Value of Mobile Services

At Securitas, we recognise the value of mobile officers. That’s why we combine highly trained officers with advanced technology to deliver a fully integrated security solution that maximises the benefits of mobile security without compromise to your safety or operational efficiency.

Though mobile patrols may be invisible to the casual observer, they are critical to operational success – their work protects people, assets and reputations.

The security industry must invest in people and integrate technology without diminishing the human element. The most effective deterrent is our personnel: mobile, alert and ready – even when the rest of us are asleep.
